Original Permutationen 1961 - Serigrafien von Almir Mavignier
Permutation paintings exhibited at venice biennale 1964
Permutations is a graphic project of Almir Mavignier in 1960, which was an essential expression of his thinking and became important for his following work as a artist, painter and graphic designer.
For this project he created three designs and a set of parameters for how they should be printed in a silkscreen process. He chose 4 background colours and 4 foreground color combinations. The printed combination resulted in 3 series a 16 prints, all with combinations of colours that were new to the artist and in the same time liberated the art work from the subjectivity of the artist, which was the driving intention behind the project. He later realised many of the results as paintings following exactly the colour combinations. .
What is interesting today is that most konkrete art paintings of Mavignier contain and represent what we today call algorithms which can be described mathematically and which can be translated/transcoded into a different and new context, in this case a music composition.

composition parameters, algorithms and process
This was the first transcoding from the permutations horizontal work of Almir Mavignier into percussion. The main approach was to treat the permutation graphic as if it was a notation system for music which we then transferred into a score system the jazz musician could use:
the graphic has three horizontal stripes and these become three parts of the composition which are read vertically (8 points) and then horizontally (31 points) each point in the graphic will be represented by a sound the altering changes in sizes have to be represented by the loudness or intensity of the sound the three different colours of the foreground have to be represented by different sounds of the drum-kit (and especially the center colour is important since it is the only colour that exists in all three stripes) |
