der Künstler ist ein Beamter des Unbekannten.” almir mavignier was a perfectionist in his work but he embraced the unknown, accidents and what he called the "o acaso determinado" ~ “the determined chance” by which he described a seemingly coincidential event which aligns with exiting intention, process or development of a project and he used this moto to keep an open mind for the potential of errors, mistakes, accidents to advance his work.
in the last years working closely with my father i have developed an new way of reading his paintings and also designs. they always deal with form, they always deal with structure, dynamism, rhythms and in his paintings also with third dimension and creating sculptural surfaces that again would interact with light.

light and sound share similar physics as they both travel in waves through a medium, our atmosphere and air, but at different frequencies. light reflects from surfaces and travelling through air reaching the back of our retina and we translate this into light and colours. the sound we hear are other wave forms, a million times slower than light waves. sound always starts as some kind of vibrations, this moves the air of our atmosphere and if we are close enough it will move the membrane of our ears and can then be translated into sound.
in cinema sound and image have always been closely connected and silent movies were accompanied by life music and a score. in the history of painting though the connection with music is not common and can often focus on the emotion or describing a scene in the painting which would be abstract and not in my interest or just for almir’s work as a concrete artist. i have started to investigate the hidden music in almirs paintings and in his themes through new compositions. the idea is to create concrete music that deals with ideas and concepts in the paintings thus creating a new layer of concrete art but in music and then to share this music with new audiences. |
almir always listened to music and we have the complete collection of his records but none of his paintings except of "beat street break down", 1986 ever dealt with concepts about music or sound. however he always listened to music and interestingly the one idea that triggered mavignier's point/grid oil paintings was a quote from paul klee, given by ex bauhaus and klee student heléne nonne-schmidt:
|
„wenn eine linie auf eine andere linie stößt, trifft sie einen punkt. dieser punkt ist ein energiepunkt. er enthält die kraft einer linie gegen die andere linie.“ paul klee was painter, drawer, caricaturist, thinker but he was also a violinist and professionaly trained musician who played everyday and was concerned with the visualisation of music. it can not be coincidential that almir was drawn to paul klee who also had this strong musical connection and instead for me this is another “o acaso determinado”, a determined chance and i will let this guide me to create research into an unknown layer of my fathers work which will become my own work and dedication in the memory of my father.

composition of new music and staging of exhibition concerts |
i have worked with my father on many projects, posters, graphic design, fotography, planning, digital prints, but only in 2016 we have started to paint together and created a number of paintings together. the main project emerged in 2018 as a series of 12 paintings called helix and i commissioned the classical composer and pianist, hector docx to create music for the series. my father was physically weak that time but we visited hector in his beautiful studio and they have exchanged beautifully and i could see one more time the creative spirit and openness which my father had throughout his life. after this meeting almir understood and gave me permission to embark on the musical journey and hector came later to the hospital. both encounters created much exchange and inspiration and a depth to the project.

in collaboration mit almir & delmar mavignier ca 28min, piano, violoncello, clarinette |
we now finished the big composition and exciting it was. the music had an impact even on the series of paintings and 4 additional works resulted based on the necessity of the music to have an introduction and ending.
and now whilst we are prepare for concerts, we have started to collaborate on new compositions and hector is working now with older paintings of almir mavignier actually working in our atelier, face to face with the paintings. |
